Can You Add Solar Panels to an Existing Solar System?

Yes, most solar PV systems in the UK can be expanded by installing additional solar panels. This process is commonly called a solar system expansion or a solar panel system upgrade. Adding extra panels increases your system’s total electricity generation, helping you reduce reliance on the grid and lower your monthly electricity bills.

What Needs to Be Checked Before Expanding?

Before installing new panels, your system must be assessed through a technical survey to ensure the inverter, roof structure, and electrical design can safely support the upgrade.

  • Inverter Capacity: Every inverter has a maximum input capacity. If your current inverter is already operating close to its limit, adding more panels may require an inverter upgrade or a second inverter.
  • Roof Space & Orientation: Installers must assess available roof area, condition, and orientation. While south-facing roofs generate the most power, east and west roofs can also perform very well in the UK.
  • Shading & Mounting: Nearby trees or chimneys can reduce output, so your installer may recommend optimisers to improve performance. They must also confirm that existing mounting rails are compatible with modern panel sizes.
  • Electrical Limits: The expanded system must comply with UK electrical safety standards regarding cable ratings and grid export limits.

Solar Panel Expansion Pricing Guide

The cost of expansion depends on roof height, access, and hardware requirements. Below is our typical pricing guide for UK homeowners:

Minimum Installation — 2 additional solar panels from £995 + VAT.
Extra Panels — £150 per additional panel.
Inverter Upgrade — Typical cost of £250 if your current model cannot handle the load.

Important: The Feed-in Tariff (FiT) Warning

If your solar panels were installed before 31 March 2019, your system may be registered under the UK Feed-in Tariff (FiT) scheme. FiT payments are based on the original system capacity approved during installation. Adding panels changes the system capacity, which may cancel or reduce your FiT payments. Always check your agreement or Energy Saving Trust guidance before modifying an accredited system.

No Roof Space? Consider a Solar Carport

If your roof is full, a solar carport is a purpose-built structure that holds panels while providing covered parking for your vehicle. They are an excellent way to generate additional power for EV charging without modifying your existing roof system.
