Air Source Heat Pumps Explained Clearly (Domestic Properties Only)

An air source heat pump (ASHP) heats your home without burning gas. Instead of creating heat, it moves heat from the air outside into your home. Yes — even when it feels cold outside!

How Does an Air Source Heat Pump Work?

Think about a fridge. A fridge takes heat from inside and pushes it outside. A heat pump does the opposite. By using a special refrigerant and a compressor, the system extracts heat from the external air and transfers it into your radiators, underfloor heating, or hot water cylinder. The Energy Saving Trust explains that even at temperatures well below freezing, there is enough heat energy in the air to power your home.

The £7,500 Government Grant

Through the Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS), the UK Government offers a £7,500 grant to help homeowners and landlords replace fossil fuel boilers with heat pumps. You can view the official government guidance here. Blue Ape Renewables handles the entire application for you, meaning the grant is deducted from your quote automatically.

Essential Requirements: EPCs and Heat Loss Surveys

To qualify for the grant and ensure your system performs efficiently, you must have a valid Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) with no outstanding recommendations for loft or cavity wall insulation. You can check your EPC status here. We also carry out a mandatory Heat Loss Survey to measure exactly how much energy your home requires, ensuring your pump is sized perfectly for your property.

Can Air Source Heat Pumps Be Installed in Flats?

Yes, but they typically require planning permission and a sound (noise) assessment to ensure they do not impact neighbours. Blue Ape currently manages large-scale planning applications for multi-unit buildings. For flats, you will also need approval from your freeholder or management company. Check the Planning Portal for details.

Save on Gas Standing Charges

If you switch to a heat pump and no longer use gas for cooking, you can have your gas meter removed. According to Ofgem, gas standing charges cost homeowners between £100–£150 per year. Over a decade, removing gas entirely could save you upwards of £1,500.
